Read
for May 2: Give Me
While reading, try to
assess what the most important facts that surprise or concern you, since you
have lived through the period that much of this history covers. Be prepared to
discuss issues that made you reconsider issues that you experienced, and
Foner’s interpretation of them. What are the most significant changes in this
period, and why? Be able to name specific information that you will be using in
your paper and explain why you think it is significant.

May 4:
Give Me
Voices of Freedom 278-288
What did the election of
2000 reveal about American politics? How does Foner’s history on 9/11 stand up
against what you perceive from your own and American popular understanding of
these events? What changes in Amerian
politics, culture and domestic politics happened as a result of 9/11? See also
all the questions after the readings in Voices of Freedom.
