In almost all cases, you are responsible for providing the original copy that will be used in your publication. We have writers on our staff who do original work for a few major university publications. In most cases, however, we edit the manuscript that you have produced. If you think you need help with the first-draft writing of your publication, it is essential that you get in touch with our office as early in the planning process as possible.

Our university editors have two major functions: to communicate your message as effectively as possible to your particular audience; and to ensure that all university publications present a coherent and consistent image of Northern Illinois University. You will always have a chance to review edited copy before it is printed.

While there are some stylistic preferences that are largely a question of taste, there are also rules of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage that are not a matter of opinion. Our editors use the University of Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook to resolve general questions. In addition, questions of style peculiar to Northern Illinois University have been resolved over the years and are collected in a guide to university style. This style guide, or Editor's Manual, allows the university to communicate in a consistent manner with all its outside audiences.

We are committed to plain talk in university publications. Ever mindful of the audience we are approaching, we try to eliminate academic jargon and wordy passages. Every reader appreciates an idea put as simply as possible.

When is it time to come to publications with a problem? As soon as possible. We like to get involved in the early planning stages; it helps us gain a greater understanding of the situation if we are involved as the early decisions are being made. Generally, the more time you are able to invest in planning, the less time and money you will have to spend on promotion.
