The signage standards program at Northern Illinois University was developed 20 years ago. It remains an important part of an overall visual identity system for the university. As the university grows it becomes harder and harder for people, especially visitors and those new to the campus, to find the building, service, or office they are looking for. The standard sign design used at Northern is a model of simplicity; it does everything a sign is intended to do-- direct, identify, regulate, and inform. The program also sets standards for the construction, installation, and maintenance of signs on campus. A consistent signage program gets people where they are going, strengthens the university's identity, and reduces the potential for a confusing clutter of signs to pollute the campus environment. All requests for permanent university signs should be directed to the publications office. The NIU Signage Standards Manual is available in its entirety ad a downloadable PDF file. A Signage Order Form is also available as a downloadable PDF file. The Campus Signage Price List is also available as a downloadable PDF file. |
