Northern's logo represents the central tower of the oldest building on campus, Altgeld Hall. It was designed to honor the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university. The logo is used on all official university publications and letterhead. Its colors, red and black, unite the university's letterhead and athletic colors. There are two variations of the university logo, one vertical and the other horizontal. Both include the same design elements. The use of the university logo must be approved by the Office of Publications. NIU horizontal logo:
