SCHOLARSHIPS

Below are a list of scholarships that Asians and Asian Americans qualify for at NIU.  Specifically, they are scholarships for minority students or scholarships which show preference for minority students.  During the 2001-2002 academic year, NIU awarded more than 400 different types of scholarships and tuition waivers in excess of 3.9 million.  For more information, please contact Dana Gautcher, the Scholarship Coordinator, at dana@niu.edu or call (815) 753-0143

Presidential Scholarship for Minority Students - NIU Office of Admissions (815) 753-8301  Award Amount: Tuition Waiver

Incoming Freshmen:
  1. ACT composite of 22
  2. Rank in top 1/3 of H.S. graduating class
Transfer students:
  1. Completion of 24 semester hours of transferable credit
  2. 3.0/4.0 GPA
Deadline:  February 1 (applicants must be admitted to NIU by February 1)

Alumni Presidential Scholarships for Minority Students - NIU Alumni Association

Graduating senior in a participating H.S. only (please check with the Alumni Association or with your high school counselor)

Act composite of 22

Rank in top 1/3 of graduating class

Supporting documentation required:

  1. Letter from student
  2. Two recommendations from H.S. teachers, counselors, or coaches
  3. NIU acceptance letter
  4. Official transcript

 

Anna Larson & Mary Jane Larson Baird Scholarship Fund - Office of the Scholarship Coordinator.  Award Amount: Variable

Minority students enrolled in classes at NIU

Demonstrated financial need

 

James Fletcher Memorial Scholarship Fund - Office of the Scholarship Coordinator (815)753-0143.  Award Amount: Variable; Typically $6,000-$12,000

Graduated from an inner-city Chicago public H.S.

Minimum "B" GPA (3.0/4.0 GPA)

Demonstrated activity in community service

Demonstrated financial need

Dean’s Diversity Scholarship for Freshmen & Transfers - College of Engineering & Engineering Technology (815)753-1442.  Award Amount: $1500

First semester freshmen admitted to CEET:
  1. Top 1/3 of graduating class
  2. 3.25/4.0 GPA
Transfer students admitted to CEET:
  1. 24 completed semester hours
  2. 3.0/4.0 GPA
U.S. Citizenship or permanent alien resident status in USA

Member of an under-represented ethnic group: Asian American, African American, Hispanic or Native American.

Leadership Tuition Waiver for Women & Minorities - College of Engineering & Engineering Technology (815)753-1442.  Award Amount: Tuition Waiver

Students admitted to CEET as first semester freshmen

Rank in top 1/3 of graduating class

3.25/4.0 GPA

U.S. Citizenship or permanent alien resident status in USA

Member of an under-represented ethnic group: Asian American, African American, Hispanic or Native American

Teacher Education Scholarship - College of Education 815-753-8352.  Award Amount: Variable

Incoming Freshmen or Transfer Students

Based on academic achievement, school/community service, and leadership

Intention to major in Early Childhood Studies, Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, or Special Education

To encourage minority persons to enter the teaching profession, one of the scholarships is targeted for a minority applicant

Georgiana W. Sie Memorial Fund - Family, Consumer, and Nutrition Sciences 815-753-1196  Award Amount: Variable

Student enrolled in the School of Family, consumer, and Nutrition Sciences specifically within Child Development

Special consideration given to Chinese students

 

Farny R. Wurlitzer Music Scholarship Fund - School of Music.  Award Amount: Variable

Music Major

Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program - NIU Graduate School.  Award Amount: Variable

Residents of Illinois

Above average academic ability

Asian American, African America, Hispanic, or native American

Recipients must agree to accept full-time appointment at an Illinois institution of higher education for a period equal to the number of years of the award.

 

APAHC Scholarship Program - Asian Pacific American Heritage Council.  Award Amount: $1000 and $2000

Children of all Asian Pacific Americans

Awards typically given to graduating H.S. seniors, and incoming freshmen. Other students are encouraged to at least inquire.                                 website : www.apahc.org

Currently enrolled NIU journalism majors.  Preference given to minorities

Junior or senior standing

Submission of portfolio of journalistic work as well as a statement of career goals and achievements
