STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF AT NIU

 

Current Student Status

     Asian American students constitute 7% (2000 figure) of the entire student body, making up the second largest minority group on campus.  This student body consists of a number of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.  This includes Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Laotian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Thai, Mongolian, among others

Growth of Asian American Student Population at NIU

In 1981, the Asian American student body consisted of 226 undergraduates, 71 graduate and students-at-large, and 2 law students.

From 1994-1998, the number of Asian American undergraduates increased by 18% (from 883 to 1043).

As of September 1999, there were 1632 students with "Asian or Pacific Islanders" racial/ethnic backgrounds.  Of these 1632 students, 1163 were undergraduate students, 393 were graduate students, 54 were students-at-large, and 22 were large students.

NIU Faculty and Staff

     In August 1999, the Asian and Asian American faculty and staff consisted of 22 Civil Service employees, 32 members of the Supportive Professional Staff, and 77 faculty members.  Of the 77 faculty, 

6 were instructors

71 were tenured or tenure-track (21 Assistant Professors, 33 Associate Professors, and 17 Full Professors).  

There were 130 tenured or tenure-track minority faculty at NIU in August 1999.
