Papers are invited for a special
issue of Popular Music and Society on New Orleans music. Topics suggested
include:
- Role of Crescent City artists/producers/recording
companies in shaping 20th Century American popular music
- Shakers and movers in the contemporary New Orleans
music scene, 1990-2005
- Impact of indigenous New Orleans dwellers on sustaining
the carnival mentality and the impromptu joy of music
- Place of decadence (prostitution, alcoholism, voodoo,
sexual deviance) and social problems (poverty, racism, bigotry) in the
development of New Orleans music
- Role of history, geography, and economics in the
creation and evolution of New Orleans music
- Alternative futures for the city of New Orleans
and its musical heritage and contributions, 2005-2025
- Comparison of New Orleans 20th Century musical influence
with Memphis, Chicago, Detroit, and Kansas City
- Potential roles of the Marsalis family, Harry Connick,
Jr., Dr. John, Irma Thomas, the Neville Brothers, Marcia Ball, and others
in restoring New Orleans popular music authority
- New Orleans artists whose talents manifest the essence
of 20th Century New Orleans music
- Relationship of cultural geography to musical development
in New Orleans (possibly including comparative studies discussing such
other cities as San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles)
Authors are encouraged
to use reasonable research design and standard literary style as they
explore New Orleans music. Papers may examine individual performers, composers,
record labels, national and global influences, performing styles, genres,
or the Diaspora of New Orleans artists and musics throughout the United
States.

- June 1, 2007--Deadline for Submission of Articles
- July 1, 2007--Acceptance of Articles Announced
- October 1, 2007--Articles Submitted to Publisher
- July 2008--Publication of Issue (Vol. 31, No. 3)

Please provide two (2) print copies plus one diskette
of the manuscript. Add bibliography and discography as necessary.
