Solution: In order to change your phone book information, you need to establish a telnet connection with the NIU Phone book system (the system is located on corn.cso.niu.edu). When you try to connect to the NIU Phone book while using a WWW browser (like Netscape), the WWW browser that you are using will need to know where it can find a copy of the telnet software in order to start-up a connection.
To solve this problem you need to tell your WWW browser where it can find the necessary telnet software. Here is how to do this with Netscape (the most common browser at NIU):
Netscape:
Select the "Options" item from the main menu bar. From the pull-down menu that appears, choose: "Preferences...". Now, from the list of items that appears (in older versions of Netscape you have to click on the down arrow to receive a list of choices) choose: "Applications and Directories".
On the line that says: "Telnet Application:" enter the path of the telnet software you are using. (If you don't know or need help, call your network administrator or the ACS Help Desk at 753-1900). If you are a LAN Workplace for Windows user, the telnet application you are using is "presenter.exe".If you are a LAN Workplace for DOS user, the telnet application you are using is "tnvt220.exe".
The "Browse" button on the right of the entry box will allow you look for the software on your hard-drive and/or network drives if you are unsure of the exact location of the software. If you are a LAN Workplace user here are some places to look:
- C:\LWP\BIN
- C:\NET\BIN
- C:\XLN\BIN
Please Note: If you login to a Local Area Network, you may need to look on a different drive other than "C:". If you are using the "Browse" utility mentioned above, you can select a different drive in the area marked "Drives" in the lower right-hand corner of the "Browse" window. NIUNET-MAIL users should look in "y:\lwp\bin" (this is subject to change).
After you have the path/filename information entered for the telnet software, click on the "OK" button. You should now be able to use the NIU Phone Book Server to modify your information.
Solution: The login for the phone book system is in all lower-case:"aph". Make sure the Caps Lock key on your keyboard is not active and that you are typing lower case letters.
Solution: Your phone book password is not valid. Use the current ph password. (This will usually be the last six digits of your student identification number (for students) or the last six digits of your Federal ID number (if you are faculty or staff).)
If you have changed your password from its initial setting and you can't remember it, you need to bring your id and come to Swen Parson 120 to have it reset.
