The study abroad office provides a number of services to students and the NIU community.

Re-Entry | Evaluations | International I.D. Cards | International Hostels | Youth Hostels | Eurail Passes

Study Abroad Advising: Our study abroad advisers help students select study abroad programs appropriate for their academic needs, personal interests, and professional goals. Students who plan to study abroad must meet with one of our advisers, in addition to an adviser from their college or academic department, before they go abroad. Study abroad advisers also help you and academic departments in getting updated syllabi to determine the transferability of credit work completed overseas.

Travel Abroad: The Study Abroad Office's resource library maintains a file of tourist materials from a number of countries, which is available for reference, as well as listings of tourist offices where students can get more information.

Work Abroad: CIEE has some information on international work opportunities. However, there is extensive opportunities for students after they graduate.

Contact Judy Tilson, director of Internships International. Or, Dolly Schroeder is available for information on International Education Programs. The Center for INTERIM Programs places college students and graduates abroad through work exchanges and internships. Contact AISEC for International Business Interns.

And finally, the following websites have further information on working abroad:

Ruth Sylte's Page
Bill Nolting's Page
International Study & Travel Center
Online Study Abroad Director

Other Study Abroad Programs: The Study Abroad Office resource library has information on a number of study abroad programs sponsored by America and foreign institutions. A student considering studying for a semester or a year abroad can easily get confused by the numerous "qualified" programs that are offered by American institutions. There are nearly two thousand five hundred existing programs in operation during the academic year.

Open House: The study abroad office hosts open houses during the academic year. Study abroad alumni attend to share their experiences with interested students.

Re-Entry Sessions: In recent years there has been an increasing emphasis within the field of international education for effective reentry programs. We send letters to students a month or so before their return from the overseas site. We explain about reentry shock and help students prepare to come home. Please visit our message web page for returning students

Evaluations: Written feedback from students, particularly in the form of questionnaires, is essential to the ongoing evaluation of our study abroad programs our office can provide you with student comments about studying abroad.

International Student and Faculty I.D. Cards: The International Student ID Card is provided to all students participating in an NIU Study Abroad program. Card-holders get a number of privileges, discounts on airfares, tours, health insurance, accommodations, admission to museums, theaters, etc.

International Hostels: Hostel memberships are valid for one year from month of purchase. Membership categories include adult, senior citizens and family. Membership provides substantial discounts in accommodations.

Youth Hostel ID: The International Youth Hostel Federation Card (IYHF Card) is required to stay at any of the 6,000 youth hostels in 70 countries (3,600 in Europe).

Hostel rates vary as does the standard of comfort: some are small, simple, no-nonsense, while others are old (such as medieval castles), some are modern, some are in downtown, and some are in the countryside. Typically, they have 4 to 20 bunkbeds in dormitory-style accommodations, common bathrooms (men and women separate), and a lounge for socializing (some have kitchens for individual meal preparation).

Hostels are by far the cheapest place to rest, with costs ranging from just $10 to $35 a night.

Applications for Youth Hostel ID's are included in your acceptance packet from NIU's Study Abroad Office. You can purchase your Hostelling International membership from NIU.

Dorm-style rooms. Women in one dorm, men in the other. Many hostels also have private rooms for families and couples.

Check in at evening time, check out after breakfast. The spirit of hostelling is to get out and explore the world. You can stow your luggage in lockers until you are ready to return.

Bring your own linens. Hostels provide the bed, blanket and pillow--you bring your own sheets, pillowcase and towels, or rent them at the larger hostels.

Eurail Passes: The beauty of having a Pass is that you can travel to almost any corner of Europe, and choose the style and pace as you go. Some of Eurail's express trains travel at speeds up to 186 miles per hour.
