NSEP Boren Graduate Fellowships and National Flagship Language Program
NIU Application Deadline: December 1, 2006

In addition to administering the NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarships, for the first time this year IIE is also administering the NSEP Boren Graduate Fellowships and National Flagship Language Program (NFLP). NSEP was designed to provide Americans with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. The NSEP Boren Graduate Fellowships encourage U.S. graduate students to add an important language component to their educations, while NFLP offers advanced language training in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, or Russian.

NSEP Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests. The fellowships are intended to provide or add to the international component of U.S. graduate students' educations. NSEP Boren Fellowships provides support for overseas study, domestic study, or a combination of both. Although study outside the United States is not required, successful applications generally include a significant overseas component.

The National Flagship Language Program was developed to address the urgent and growing need for Americans with professional levels of competency in languages critical to national security. NFLP is designed to train participants to reach professional working proficiency in an aforementioned target language, as measured by the federal Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 3 and/or the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) superior level.
