2002 Math Camp:

A Mathematical Odyssey

http://www3.niu.edu/ext_prog/math2002.html

Who is the camp for?
High school students who enjoy mathematics. Enthusiasm and talent in mathematics usually go hand in hand, but of the two, we prefer enthusiasm.

What are the goals of the camp?
The world of mathematics is more diverse and beautiful than the standard material covered in textbooks and regular courses. We wish to expose campers to many new and exciting branches of mathematics.

What will we do all day?
Workshops, problem sessions, games and competitions (with prizes!), movies. In addition, daily talks will be given by members of the NIU faculty and guest speakers from outside the university. A sample of possible topics:

  • Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (and remarkable Mathematicians)
  • Map-making
  • Crunching gigantic numbers
  • Software they won't let you use in school
  • Chomp, Hex, and games with secret strategies
  • Strings and silly string: Mathematics in today's scientific research
  • My infinity can beat your infinity!
  • Using statistics in medicine, politics, and psychic experiements
  • Finding mathematics in music
  • Tales from the front: Professinal information about mathematics careers
We realize that young people cannot just do math all day long. Recreational facilities are available on campus. Plus, we organize a field trip to Argonne National Lab or the Museum of Science and Industry.

NIU's Math Camp is for students who have completed grades 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12. One year of high school equivalent algebra is recommended.

Fees
Only $415($465 after 6/29).  Returning campersl receive a $25 discount.

Camp Director
Richard Blecksmith is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Northern Illinois University and has been at NIU since 1984. He has published several articles in the American Mathematical Monthly. His areas of interest are number theory and combinatorics. He is also secretary of the Number Theory Foundation.
