Northern Public Radio (NPR) plays an important role in the university's public service mission by providing high quality arts and information radio program services to the residents of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through the operation of non-commercial, FM public radio stations WNIU (90.5 FM) and WNIJ (89.5 FM).

NPR also provides the reading of daily newspapers, books, magazines, and other specialized information to people with visual or physical disabilities through the operation of the Northern Illinois Radio Information Service (NIRIS), a closed-circuit radio channel for the blind and print-handicapped.

Studio A - A Major Opportunity for Growth
Studio A is a large performance and recording space that was constructed during the NIU Broadcast Center renovation in 1991 but never equipped. Completion of Studio A will provide an important recording studio for NIU performance groups and provide a revenue producing opportunity for Northern Public Radio. Needs include HVAC redesign for recording-studio quality, recording and production equipment, acoustic treatments, etc. Total cost for this project is $250,000. Individual items to be sponsored begin at $10,000 and naming opportunities exist.
