Parents’ Fund

Each year, the Annual Fund contacts parents to talk to them about their son or daughter's experience at NIU and to ask them for support toward the Parents’ Fund. Last year, over 1,200 parents donated approximately $54,000 to Northern Illinois University.

Parents of NIU students have been strong supporters of the Parents’ Fund, which allows the Parents’ Association to fulfill its commitment to making families of NIU students feel as connected to the University as possible. Gifts to the Parents’ Fund help to provide the following benefits to all families of NIU students:

  • The Parents’ Association is available to answer questions and concerns that families may have, but don’t know where to go for answers.
  • Theme meetings, which are generated from parent concerns, are offered for parents on topics such as Financial Aid, Career Planning issues, health issues, etc.
  • Activities and events geared specifically toward parents and family members of NIU students are offered each year, including free Move-In Day massages, Family Weekend activities, and Orientation and Open House events.
  • Families are provided with a newsletter once a semester in order to keep them up-to-date on campus activities and events, allowing for more opportunities for families to be involved with their students.
  • A phone line (815-752-2222), web page, and e-mail are maintained to allow for more direct contact for parents.

Gifts to the Parents’ Fund also support a scholarship which was established by the Parents’ Association. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Northern student each year. Please visit the Parents’ Association website for more information.
