Reunion Gift for the Class of 1955
The Barsema Alumni & Visitors Center
Each year, the Alumni Association hosts a Circle of Gold Reunion for the 50th reunion class. In conjunction with this milestone event, it is tradition for the reunion class to raise money in support of a campus priority project through their class gift. This is a time for class members to go above and beyond their normal philanthropy to Northern and join together to leave their mark on the Univeristy.
This year, the reunion Class of 1955 will leave their mark by supporting one of Northern’s current principal projects: The Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center. When completed, this facility will be the new “front door” to campus, welcoming in all alumni, visitors, students, faculty and staff.
For alumni, the center will be a place to “come home;” a central gathering place and venue where they can reconnect with the University.
For students, the center will be a place for on-campus groups to hold meetings. It will also be the starting point for all campus tours and orientations, giving prospective and future students an impressive introduction to the Northern experience.
For faculty, the center’s faculty library will showcase and celebrate books, artwork, and awards that have been written, created, or bestowed upon NIU’s distinguished faculty.
For the DeKalb community, the center will be the premiere venue for private occasions such as weddings, family reunions, anniversaries, and other important events.
The Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center will be a facility that benefits all generations of Northern alumni, and, because of that fact, the Class of 1955 will join efforts with the Class of 2005 to provide a combined class gift. The Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center will be a place that all alumni—including the Classes of 1955 and 2005—can call their own as they will use it to gather and reconnect with the University. This historic gift from past and future alumni will be publicly recognized on the grounds of the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center through a bench that will be adorned with a commemorative plaque. This bench will hopefully act as a catalyst, inspiring other groups to make a similar philanthropic commitment to Northern Illinois University.
