Scholarship News

The "David Onak Northern Star Endowed Scholarship" was established with the proceeds from a golf outing arranged by alumni Phil Sonni and Glen Nelson. As of November, over $23,000 was given in memory of David Onak (B.A. '81 Journalism/Public Relations). $17,500 of the total raised was a gift from the PGA Tour solicited by David's friend Brian Fitzgerald of Wilmette, IL.
 
With a gift of $10,000, Isabelle Duminy-Kovarik (B.S. '80, M.S.Ed. '87) established the Van Acker-Duminy-Kovarik Scholarship Endowment in memory of her parents who instilled in her a high regard for education. Isabelle attributes her academic, personal and professional success to the excellent education she received from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
 
The Norman S. and Marion D. Gilbert Endowed Scholarship in Music was established with a gift of $12,000 to support Music students with financial need. Norm Gilbert (B.S. Mathematics '54) returned to teach at NIU in 1969 after earning his M.S. and Ph.D. He retired as a Professor of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Special Ed. in 1995, and since 1998 has worked in the NIU Admissions Office. Marion joined NIU in 1975 and worked for twenty years before retiring as Secretary in the College of Education in 1995.
 
Faculty member Jerry Zar (retired) has just established the "Jerrold H. Zar Endowed Scholarship in Biology" for senior biology majors (with a gift of $25,000). Jerry has given an additional $2,000 so that scholarship awards can be made this fiscal year and next before the endowment's first distributions in FY03-04.
 
Bruce A. Bastian, son of NIU alumna Alverda Bastian (1903-2000), pledged $25,000 to establish an endowed scholarship for College of Education students in loving memory of his mother. Alverda Bastian taught when teachers didn't need a college education in a one-room schoolhouse in Illinois. She attended NIU late in life, earning her B.A. at age 51, and a M.A. at 55. A quilt, made by his mother in 1933, now hangs proudly in the NIU Childcare Center.
 
Earl and Margaret Hoffmann established the "Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education," with a stock transfer valued at $35,346. This scholarship will benefit needy senior students who are studying to be teachers and will graduate within the subsequent 12-month period. This is the Hoffmanns' second endowed scholarship.
 
Alumnus Bob English (Ed.D. '74 & IBHE Board member) and wife Mary have given another $45,000 to their College of Education Technology Fund, which purchases hardware and software for NIU students planning to teach elementary school. Bob also facilitated a 3-year IBHE grant of $150,000 to support training for those students.
 
Mrs. Betty DeGunther gave $10,000 to establish an endowed merit law scholarship as a tribute to her late husband. The Honorable Richard Neil DeGunther Sr. was a distinguished scholar and law professor. Mrs. DeGunther made an additional $1,000 expendable gift to award a scholarship in 2001to first-year law student Rebecca C. Davenport.
 
The Number Theory Foundation (represented by John Selfridge, retired math department chair) gave $25,000 to establish the Number Theory Endowment in Mathematical Sciences. The fund will provide financial support for programs that support the discipline of Number Theory and/or scholarship awards to math students.
