Two new scholarships announced

Patrick R. Delaney Endowed Accountancy Scholarship

To honor long-time accountancy professor Pat Delaney upon his retirement, friends and colleagues have established the Patrick R. Delaney Endowed Accountancy Scholarship.

Delaney taught at NIU for more than 30 years at NIU, and spent more than 12 of those years as department chair. He was instrumental in building a program of national prominence one that has been ranked among the top 10 in the nation for the last several years.

During his tenure he also received many awards for his teaching, helped create the NIU-CPA review program graduates of which consistently have some of the highest pass-rates in the country and he wrote the best selling CPA exam prep text in the nation.

Delaney is also well-respected outside of academe. Last year the Illinois CPA Society took the rare step of according Delaney honorary member status in recognition of his contributions to the field.

Pat Delaney has touched the lives of thousands of people during his career at NIU, and it is the hope of those who established it that through the scholarship fund he will continue to benefit accountancy majors at NIU for many years.

For more information on the Patrick R. Delaney Endowed Accountancy Scholarship contact contact Gerald Bloodsaw in the NIU Office of Development at 753-1137, the Department of Accountancy at 753-1637, or see the web at http://www.cob.niu.edu/accy/prd_bio.html.

James L. Massey Memorial Scholarship

A memorial scholarship for honors students has been established in the name of James L. Massey.

Massey, who led the University Honors Program from 1994 until his death on Aug. 1, 1999, always urged students to enhance their academic experience with community involvement. He encouraged them to treat their time at the university as an opportunity for both educational and personal growth, which he believed came through giving one's best to help others become their best.

Family and friends created the scholarship in hopes that some of the university's most accomplished students will continue to be inspired by the values, dedication and commitment that Massey demonstrated throughout his career at NIU. It is intended to enhance, intensify and broaden the educational experience for students of high academic potential.

For more information, or to make a contribution, contact Gerald Bloodsaw in the NIU Office of Development at 753-1137 or Joanne Ganshirt at the NIU Honors Program at 753-9398.
