SELF-INTRODUCTORY ASSIGNMENT
PART I: 50 PTS. (5%)
SELF-INTRODUCTORY SPEECH
Procedure: Your first speech will introduce yourself to your classmates based on your cultural background. This speech of self-introduction provides you with an opportunity to develop credibility before your audience. It is a chance for you to be seen as competent, trustworthy, likable, and forceful. It will allow you to understand more about your own cultural identification and how it relates to your communication frame of reference.
Requirements:
- Your speech should be 3-4 minutes in length.
- You should include one interview with a person who can provide information about your cultural background.
- Your speech MUST be extemporaneous. This means that you speak using a brief outline on notecards, rather than writing your speech out and reading it word-for-word from a manuscript.
- Your instructor may require you to turn in an outline developed from one of the outline format sheets.
Grading Criteria (Also see Grading Sheet):
Your grade will be based on your development of the following:
- Clear, identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion.
- Body covers no more than three clear main points.
- Speech includes a variety of supporting material, including the required outside interview.
- Delivery reinforces what you are saying and begins to appear natural and relaxed.
10% (100 POINTS)
Procedure: You are free to select the topic for this assignment keeping in mind two guidelines. (1) Select a topic in which you already are interested or are somewhat of an expert and (2) select a topic which you can demonstrate relevance/significance to your audience. Your general goal is to provide new information or understanding to your classmates.
Requirements:
- 5-6 minutes in length.
- You are required to research your topic. Therefore, you will include in your speech supporting materials which you may draw from the following: (1) library/computer resources and (2) interviews with experts. You will cite at least three separate sources in the delivery of your speech.
- Your instructor will require you to turn in a typed outline and bibliography. Instructor may specify a a required minimum of sources.
- Your speech MUST be extemporaneous. This means that you speak using a brief outline on notecards, rather writing your speech out and reading it word-for-word from a manuscript.
Grading Criteria (Also see Grading Sheet):
Your grade will be based on your development of the following:
- Clear, identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion.
- Introduction that includes getting your audience's attention, involving the audience, establishing your credibility and providing a thesis statement and preview. Take your audience into account.
- Body that contains an appropriate speech design pattern for organizing main points and clear transitions.
- Cited supporting materials which relate to your audience.
- Conclusion that restates your main points and takes your audience into account.
- Delivery reinforces what you are saying with emphasis on direct eye contact, vocal variety, careful articulation, and purposeful movement.
PERSUASIVE SPEAKING ASSIGNMENT
15% (150 Points)
Procedure: Again, you select the topic. This time, keep in mind that you must select a topic about which your audience holds varying beliefs. Your general objective is to convince your audience to give favorable attention to your point of view on an issue or problem. You will keep in mind the following specific goals: (1). you will want to influence how your audience believes or acts on issues/problems they care about; (2) in order to do this, you must offer sufficient reasons/supports for the audience to accept your position.
Requirements:
- 7-8 minutes in length.
- This speech will require research in order to support the claims you
make. You will include in your speech supporting materials which you may
draw from the following:
- library/computer resources
- interviews with experts
- You will cite at least four separate sources in the delivery of your speech.
- Your instructor will require you to turn in an outline and bibliography.
- Your speech MUST be extemporaneous. This means that you speak using a brief outline on notecards, rather than writing your speech out and reading it word-for-word from a manuscript.
Grading Criteria: How well you develop the following:
- Clear, identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion that take your audience into account.
- Introduction that includes getting your audience's attention, involving the audience, establishing your credibility, and developing a thesis statement which establishes your point of view.
- Body that contains an appropriate speech design for organizing main points for a persuasive speech and clear transitions.
- Audience centered speech developed from an audience survey.
- Cited supporting materials which relate to your audience.
- Effective conclusion which restates your main persuasive points and takes your audience into account.
- Delivery which enhances your persuasive message. Nonverbal interaction with the audience established through strong eye contact, vocal variety, and purposeful gestures and movement.
- Persuasive appeals related to your audience. (When choosing an appeal(s) look at the audience disposition toward the topic.)
