John Peter Altgeld: The Eagle Remembered

This film is a historical documentary which examines Illinois's famous, progressive governor from 1892-1896. Altgeld was most notorious as the pardoner of the remaining members of the Haymarket Riot anarchists in 1893. He was vilified in newspapers across the nation for his pro-labor views and his alleged sympathy for the anarchist perspective. This was further compounded by his public clash with President Cleveland over the Pullman strike in Chicago.

However Altgeld's progressive political action in Illinois seems to be forgotten. He tripled the budget at the University of Illinois, and created teachers' colleges at Macomb and DeKalb. He also appointed prominent feminists from Hull House to cabinet level posts. Only his German birth prevented him from becoming a presidential candidate instead of William Jennings Bryan whom Altgeld mentored.
