Committees Coffeehouse coordinates an alternative music series every week at 12 noon and 7 p.m. in the Diversions Lounge of the Holmes Student Center. Shows are held outdoors in the MLK Commons or Central Park when weather permits. Concerts books both small-scale shows and large concert events. Recent concerts have included Counting Crows, Faith Evans, Nine Days, and Nelly. Members meet weekly to plan booking availability, budgeting, and finance. Membership on this committee is based on application. Corporate Relations committee members interact with corporate representatives from such companies as Nestle, Pepsi, and Sports Illustrated. Members gain marketing and sales experience by soliciting sponsors for committee donations and CAB events. Films plans weekly free entertainment, including a wide variety of blockbuster and alternative films. Fine Arts presents touring Broadway plays, legendary jazz musicians, national ballet and modern dance companies, and outstanding musical groups. See the Fine Arts brochure for details of this year's series. Homecoming coordinates Homecoming Week festivities with Athletics and the Alumni Association. Promoting school spirit and new traditions, Homecoming fosters over 100 years of Huskie pride. Public Relations promotes each CAB event, increases the awareness of CAB on campus, and recruits new members. Committee members gain advertising and PR skills. The SA Art Curator acquires, catalogs, maintains, and rotates all of the pieces in the NIU Student Association Art Collection. The SA Art Collection is one of the largest student-owned collections in the country. Speakers committee members select and coordinate a wide-ranging series of speakers. These speakers come to campus to provide students with educational, entertaining, and diverse messages. Past speakers include Maya Angelou, Indigo Girls, Rudy Boesch from Survivor, and Cameron Mathison from All My Children. Special Events coordinates promotional giveaway tours, Family Weekend, comedians, and novelty acts. Family Weekend is an annual event that allows students to share the university experience with their families. Springfest coordinates a week-long series of events that serves as a stress reliever for students towards the end of the spring semester including Nooners (events in MLK Commons), Battle of the Bands, and Casino Night. Summer Programming serves as the programming board for NIU's summer session. Members plan day trips, small concerts, movies, and the annual outdoor "Jazz in the Night" celebration. Travel sponsors day trips for theater, shopping, and Chicago sporting events. Committee members also plan extended trips to exciting locations during the semester breaks. Unity in Diversity promotes awareness of diversity on our campus through seminars, speakers, and other cultural events. Committee members participate in all respects of programming, from dealing with agents to promoting new events. Visual Arts coordinates student art shows in the Holmes Student Center Gallery, assists the SA art curator, and plans events with professional artists.
