The
Northern Rio Grande Project
Winifred Creamer has been
involved in archaeological research at a variety of late prehistoric
Pueblo villages in north central New Mexico. Initiated in 1992,
the four-week field school provides students with training in archaeological
field methods and the opportunity to participate in the ongoing
research on the impact of Europeans on the Native Americans of the
Rio Grande Valley. The Northern Rio Grande Research Project, a collaborative
research project directed by Winifred Creamer of the Department
of Anthropology and Jonathan Haas of the Field Museum of Natural
History, is currently focused on identifying changes in population
that occurred as a result of contact between Europeans and the Pueblo
people of New Mexico during the 16th century.
Field school students participate in all aspects of research, including
sampling techniques, excavation, and laboratory work. Lectures,
visits to archaeological sites, and the opportunity to witness summer
dances by contemporary Pueblo people, provide a comprehensive introduction
to the desert Southwest.
