Faculty
The anthropology faculty numbers 11 full-time scholars, three part-time
scholars, five emeritus professors, and a museum director.
Faculty research and teaching interests span all four subdisciplines
of anthropology (archaeology, linguistic anthropology , physical/biological
anthropology and social/cultural anthropology), and the department
boasts excellent research programs and research and teaching collections.
Several faculty play central roles in NIU's Women's Studies Program,
the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and Latino and Latin American
Studies. Ongoing research programs include NIU's Contract Archaeology
Program, The Sicilian Elymi Project (Sicilian Prehistory) the Northern
Rio Grande Archaeological Research Project, and Na Heiau o Maui
(Hawaiian Prehistory). Two faculty members hold adjunct or research
associate positions at the Field Museum in Chicago, and one at the
Burpee Natural History Museum. Another integral aspect of anthropology
at NIU is the Museum of Anthropology, which provides student experience
in anthropological museology. Additionally, we also have expertise
in applied anthropology, forensic anthropology, museum studies,
and cognitive science. Lastly, we provided numerous opportunities
for our students to exercise their knowledge by offering field schools
in archaeology, applied anthropology, and cultural anthropology
in such far-flung places as Peru, Maui, Sicily, Cambodia, and exotic
Illinois.
