Significant policy questions regarding Latino civil rights and debates
over multiculturalism in education were raised by two visitors this spring.
Law Professor Gerald Lopez from Stanford University was invited by NIU's
college of Law and the center to speak on legal, civil, and political issues
surrounding the passage of Proposition 187 by California voters. He faced
icy rains but a warm audience on April 20, and sparked debates among law
students in the Moot court over the precedence of individual or socially
constituted rights. Professor Evelyn Hu-DeHart of the University of
Colorado offered well-attended workshops and a public lecture on "Rethinking
America: The Practice and Politics of Multiculturalism in Higher Education,"sponsored
by The Provost's Taskforce on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation.
"...music is a way of learning more about ourselves: our traditions,
our culture, our heritage...." -Los Folkloristas
About 400 members of the NIU community enjoyed the Latin American music
performed by Los Folkloristas of Mexico City, interpreters of the
Nueva
Cancion and diverse indigena, African and mestizosounds
of the Americas. Internationlly known for renditions of modern and ancient
music played on at least 60 distinct instruments, the group's fourth concert
here was sponsored by the Center on September 26, 1994.
The Center was pleased to co-sponsor, with the School of Music and the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a recital by classical guitarist Javier Calderon and concert pianist Elizabeth Gutierrez. Presenting music by Spanish and Latin American composers on the evening of March 21, their recital included Sonata No. 24 in D minor by Pader Antonio Soler (1729 - 1783), Torre Bermeja by Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909), Preludeby Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948) and Fantasia para un gentilhombreby Joaquin Rodrigo (1901- ).
We appreciate the efforts of other campus departments and student groups to bring Latino speakers, fine arts and popular events to campus. The Latino Awareness Month Commitee invited poet Martin Espada, University of Massachusets, to a reading and a talk entitled "The Savior is Abducted: Colonialism & Independence in Puerto Rico" on September 22, 1994. Elvia Alvarado, an activist for peasan communities in Honduras who wrote Don't be afraid Gringo, described her detention and deportation by INS officials during her trip from Central America to speak as an invited guest at NIU and other universities. From California, recording artists Los Lobospresented their unique combination of music last October: folklorico, blues, and Latino-Rock fusion at DeKalb's Egyptian Theatre, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
