CYBORGS AND WITCHES

The ideal of the cyborg is similar, in some aspects, to the ideals that are discussed in Starhawk's Dreaming the Dark: Magic, Sex, and Politics. The author suggests "bringing together the spiritual and the political," which are two powerful forces within our society. Starhawk recognizes herself as a witch and practices what is referred to as witchcraft. Symbolically, both terms represent a set of ideals that are contrary to ideals of a patriarchal society. Witchcraft proposes an acceptance of nature and all of its components. Similarly, the cyborg attempts to join two powerful forces, human and machine. Starhawk and the cyborg work towards the same goal, which is to change consciousness. However, Starhawk's change comes from within, whereas the origin of change is not obvious from the cyborg point of view.

One encourages change, while the other seems to force change. Witchcraft allows each individual to experience change at a personal pace. The cyborg is not as gracious.
