Cognitive Sciences
In academic year 2000-2001, four assistant professors were hired
to start a Cognitive Studies Program at NIU. They are Giovanni
Bennardo in Anthropology, Reva Freedman in Computer Science,
Betty Birner in English (Linguistics), and Katja Wiemer-Hastings
in Psychology. The four members of the group were given the task
to prepare a new class that would provide an entry into the program
for undergraduate students.
In spring 2002, for the first time on the NIU campus, the class
ILAS 290 (Language, Mind, and Thought) was co-taught by the aforementioned
professors. In the future, this class will be offered every fall
semester. A new class will also be prepared at the 300-400 level
in the coming years. The two classes together will provide the basic
structure onto which students will be able to add other classes
already offered in a variety of departments to construct a minor
in Cognitive Studies. The intention is to offer also a graduate
program in Cognitive Studies within a few years.
